The Yanka Rudzka _ Poliphonies

We meet in the practice and we practice the meeting.

Stepping on the ancestors’ shoulders,

we delve  into the present

and transform the future.


Can you (and how) juxtapose at the same time such so seemingly distant dance worlds as Brazilian samba, Armenian kochari, Georgian svanuri and Polish oberek? The Yanka Rudzka Project: POLYPHONIES  joins artists of Armenia, Brazil, Georgia and Poland  in a journey to the sources and back. Studying work of YANKA RUDZKA – Polish dancer that in the 50s.of XXc. left for Brazil to become there the seminal figure of the local scene –  and by her belief that contemporary culture cannot thrive without a broad recognition of its traditional roots, we shared a dance practice stemming from traditional, non-stylized dance cultures of our countries. And we posed questions about the significance of these traditions for contemporary choreography.  Entering with traditional dances into alien to it context – right on the dance floor – proposing to look at techno as a new folk – the performance explores social dimension of dance celebrating its  unifying, ecstatic and transforming power.


The project is part of the international cultural programme POLSKA 100, which is coordinated by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and realized within the international cultural programme POLSKA 100. Financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland as part of the multiannual programme NIEPODLEGŁA 2017–2021.
